rooted in understanding

Rooted Minds also partners with schools and educators who want to better support students whose nervous systems process the world differently. Through professional development, consultation, and collaborative problem solving, I help educators understand behavior through a nervous system lens and build environments where more students can feel safe, regulated, and ready to learn.

My background in special education leadership, speech and communication development, and school systems allows me to support both educators and families while helping teams work together more effectively.

Professional Development and Training

These trainings focus on practical strategies that help educators understand behavior, support regulation, and create classroom environments where more students can feel safe, engaged, and ready to learn.

Each training can be adapted to the needs of your school or team.

Training Topic

Understanding Behavior Through a Nervous System Lens

How nervous system states shape behavior and what educators can do in real time.

Students do not enter the classroom as "behaviors." They arrive with nervous systems that may be regulated, overwhelmed, anxious, or shut down.

This training helps educators understand what behavior is communicating beneath the surface and introduces practical ways to support students experiencing stress, sensory overwhelm, or emotional dysregulation.

Rather than focusing only on correcting behavior, educators learn how adult responses and classroom environments influence regulation, learning, and connection.

Educators will explore

  • How nervous system states influence learning and behavior
  • Recognizing early signs of dysregulation
  • Co-regulation strategies educators can use in real time
  • Language and responses that support connection and safety
  • Classroom practices that help students return to a regulated state

Participants receive practical classroom tools and strategy guides they can immediately begin using with students.

Reframing Behavior Support in the Classroom

Moving from compliance-based responses to understanding and supporting regulation.

Many behavior systems were designed around compliance and consequences, yet many students today struggle because their nervous systems are overwhelmed rather than because they are choosing to misbehave.

This training helps educators rethink behavior through a developmental and nervous system informed perspective while still maintaining clear expectations and classroom structure.

The goal is not to remove boundaries, but to help teachers respond in ways that support regulation, learning, and long term skill building.

Educators will explore

  • Why traditional behavior systems sometimes fail certain students
  • How stress, anxiety, and sensory overwhelm affect behavior
  • Shifting from reaction to understanding underlying needs
  • Strategies that reduce power struggles and escalation
  • Building classrooms where students feel safe enough to learn

Participants receive practical strategies, reflection tools, and classroom practices designed to support both students and educators.

Supporting Neurodiverse Learners in the Classroom

Practical ways to support students who experience the classroom differently.

Many educators want to support neurodiverse learners well but were never given the training to fully understand how different brains experience learning environments.

This training focuses on practical ways educators can support students who experience the classroom differently, including students with attention differences, sensory sensitivities, communication differences, and learning variations.

The goal is to help educators create classroom environments where more students can engage, participate, and feel successful.

Educators will explore

  • How different brains process information, stress, and transitions
  • Recognizing sensory overwhelm and attention fatigue
  • Environmental adjustments that support focus and engagement
  • Strategies for transitions, communication, and participation
  • Ways to support regulation during the school day

Participants receive classroom strategy guides and practical tools that can be implemented immediately.

Rooted Rhythm: A Nature-Aligned Nervous System Framework for Schools

Helping educators recognize rhythm disruptions and restore balance through environment, schedule, and relationship.

Rooted Rhythm is a professional development training that helps educators understand student behavior through the lens of nervous system regulation and biological rhythm. Rather than focusing on behavior control, the framework teaches teachers how to recognize rhythm disruptions and restore balance through environment, schedule, and relationship.

Regulation emerges when nervous systems move in rhythm with body, time, and environment.

Educators learn how stress, fatigue, sensory environments, and daily schedules influence a student’s ability to focus, learn, and connect. When these rhythms are disrupted, dysregulation appears. When rhythm is restored, learning becomes possible again.

The Rhythmic Regulation Wheel

Four natural nervous system states that appear throughout the school day:

  • Sun — Activation: Energy, movement, curiosity, engagement. When dysregulated: impulsivity, restlessness, difficulty staying focused.
  • Wind — Connection: Communication, belonging, relational safety. When disrupted: peer conflict, attention seeking, social withdrawal.
  • Water — Integration: Reflection, processing, meaning-making. When dysregulated: repeating mistakes, overthinking, difficulty articulating.
  • Mountain — Rest: Grounding, recovery, calm focus. When disrupted: withdrawal, fatigue, overwhelm.

The Dysregulation Compass

A quick diagnostic tool. Instead of assuming defiance, teachers learn to ask:

  • Is the body rhythm disrupted? (fatigue, hunger, illness, chronic stress)
  • Is the time rhythm disrupted? (long work blocks, limited transitions, energy dips)
  • Is the environment rhythm disrupted? (noise, crowding, sensory overload, social tension)

Four-Step Response Protocol

  • Observe the rhythm signal
  • Identify the rhythm disruption
  • Restore the missing rhythm
  • Return the student to learning

Training Outcomes

  • Recognize nervous system states in real time
  • Identify rhythm disruptions affecting behavior
  • Apply regulation strategies in classroom moments
  • Design daily schedules that support student regulation

Designed for teachers, special education staff, school leaders, counselors, student support teams, and paraprofessionals. Available as a 90-minute keynote, half-day workshop, full-day training, or multi-session certification program.
